Although I typically approach New York neighborhoods through <A HREF="http://www.eatingintranslation.com/2007/05/norwegian_refre.html" REL="nofollow">whatever food I might find there</A>, I also try to keep my eyes peeled for old signage, fixtures, and other curiosities. (New can be OK, too.) Also note: The Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava, on W. 25th St., will hold it's annual tag sale (with Balkan food, I've read) on June 2 and 3.
