It got me through my pregnancy and I seek it out whenever I am back in Brooklyn. We used to live above Saul Goldberg's glass-cutting shop, which had belonged to his parents before him. Then we lived on 1st Place. I remember coming out to the sidewalk with babe in arms to buy basilico from the man with his cart, and walking to see the men carrying the giglio down the street. This was in 1995. I am Sicilian, not Neapolitan, but the neighborhood was home to me and reminded me of my Nonie.Linda Nortonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16946883192189125771noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21554899.post-82456987755240923392017-05-06T12:14:06.777-07:002017-05-06T12:14:06.777-07:00I conduct historical tours in this neighborhood, I...I conduct historical tours in this neighborhood, I have some very fond memories of the shows... I personally knew Joe, he was supply sarg in the 32nd National Guard, Company K of the 127th, we drilled every Monday night at the South Side Armory, at 6th and Mitchell. Later it was change to Company B of the 3rd batle group. I and couple buddies would stop in by Joe to get our boots shine for drill. We also bought our smokes from Joe. Joe was a friend to the younger crowd, he start a lot kids out by having them shine shoes. When I saw it was available I would rejoice! To this day I can't find a better vegetable soup.

I wish we had pictures of the place, I have never found any in my parent's things. After my dad died when I was twelve, we seldom went out of New Jersey and I regret that when I visited back east and went up as an adult with my (now) husband, we didn't make enough time to stop by the Red Apple. A huge regret!

Thanks for posting these pics; they are so bittersweet to see. Although I don't remember what I ate there, I remember it being a small, cozy place. I have always been under the impression that Bananas Foster was invented there. (Makes sense, doesn't it?) Imagine my amazement when I just learned that the famous dessert was created at Brennan's Restaurant in New Orleans! I was to the factory a few times to pick up my orders. Since a child Christmas animations were so magical to me. When I moved to downsize to a 1 car garage I sold some and spit them up with my brother. I just acquired the set of the outdoor carolers for my new home and cannot wait to display them under my porch this Christmas. Hambergers displays were the best and is very sad they are no longer in business now for many years. I have the Santa with the list along with the set of the 5 caroler family. My brother still has the elf with Santa's gift bag, and the elf pushing the gift cart, and four of the outdoor carolers. They are all still in like new condition! As we really do appreciate these and have takened very good care of them. When we lost Hambergers animations we lost a great holiday traction as no one makes animations like they did! One Saturday there must have been 300 people in there and spilling out onto the street. The manager (Cam/Kam?) got up on stage and played percussion for a while. Looking out over the sea of humanity it seemed like a tide that would break upon the stage. There was a cajun chef there for a while who made the best fried chicken I ever had. There was an amazing band we double billed with sometimes call Styve--loved them. Those of us on the inside used to get special desserts at the bar--god I miss that place.
Jason StripinisAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14896824275968484379noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21554899.post-8496279806759171552017-02-19T07:36:25.864-08:002017-02-19T07:36:25.864-08:00That sign is actually at 68-02 Fresh Pond Rd, not ...That sign is actually at 68-02 Fresh Pond Rd, not 16-02 (a non-existent address)Rick Dnoreply@blogger.com
