A traveling sign, anyway. For one of the City's few mobile knife-grinding services. Wonder how many people come out with lawnmowers to be "sharpened by lathe"?
Nice to see that. We have a couple here in Toronto that go around in the summer - they sharpen kitchen knives too, and play bells as they go down the street to alert customers.
I'm the editor of Goodie magazine www.goodie.org, and our office is on 8th Street in Brooklyn. We had a donated paper cutter that wasn't cutting, and happily for us a month or so ago, here came Bob the grinder down 8th Street. He took the blade off and sharpened it so well that it can now cut through a deli napkin. Thank goodness for Bob. There are a few of these grinding trucks yet and I'm always so happy to see them.
When I was a kid my Mom would send my dad running out with the lawnmower, the clippers and "the good scissors" when we heard the bell signaling his approach in Crown Heights. That was 35 years ago, it is now run by his son i believe and he frequents Park slope. I see him around Park Slope at least once a week especially during the warmer months.

Not too many, considering the paving over of lawns is the current trend.

ReplyDeleteHow does one find them or their route? Is there a #?

ReplyDeleteI'm trying to contact Bob the knife grinder for a project I'm working on. Anyone have his contact information? Thanks for any help!
ReplyDeleteI've seen Bob on City Island in the Bronx. I wish he'd come by again. I need my lawn mower blade sharpened.
