Lone Holdout

Sixth Avenue between 22nd Street and 21st is an utterly ruined block. It's chains north to south: Game Stop, Chipotle, McDonald's, etc. Except Maffei's. I don't know how this otherwise utterly charmless pizzeria has done it, but it's hung on during the Bloomberg blight. Been there for 20 years, and, for some reason, I never fear it's going out of business. People praise it's Grandma Slice. I myself have had only passable pizza there. And the facade is so ugly I shade my eyes every time I pass it. But I'm glad it's there. Every block has to have at least one indy joint, or soon we're all doomed.
