The Stoned Crow, beloved Village dive, closes tonight after 17 years. Here's one last look at the chair where the owner surveys the pool activity and makes sure no injury comes to her beloved table.

Shucks! Why are they closing? Another impossible rent increase? Just came back from their website and it looks to have been a fun place: get lubed and play some pool, as one of the reviews said. Happy hour beers and well drinks for $4 and after that $5. Ten dollar, 1/2 lb burger....what's not to love? Reviewer found it one of the best places in town to go and shoot pool (as opposed to playing billiards). Awfully sad to see it go.
Hey Brooks.....Happy New Year to you! I know that in many ways this has not been a good year for NYC. Much has been lost or is newly threatened. But take heart in knowing that this blog and your decision to continue it bring some rays of sunshine to many of us, even if sometimes your forecast is for rain.
May 2011 bring a plague upon greedheads of all sorts, and a resurgence of dive bars, mom & pop stores, and all the other examples of NYC's cultural heritage. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for the city bosses and their planners to get their heads straight, or for landlords to actually care about their nabes instead of solely their bottom line, but I'm not giving up hope, either. Thanks to Lost City. See you in 2011.
The original, running Jeremiad on the vestiges of Old New York as they are steamrolled under or threatened by the currently ruthless real estate market and the City Fathers' disregard for Gotham's historical and cultural fabric. Est. January 2006. Contact Me
I have lived in New York City since 1988 and earn my bread as a writer. I began this blog in January 2006. Beyond that, don't be so nosy.

One of the old book jackets lining the walls of Chumley's. Eternal Shame on Bloomberg, the City Fathers, and the powers that be that this cultural landmark has STILL not been saved and reopened.
