A Good Sign: Joe's Tavern
Found this battered old vertical neon sign outside a building way over on 10th Avenue and 25th. Joe's is long gone, and it doesn't look like the ground floor business space has been inhabited for years. I've seen this style of sign, with the horizontal "BAR" tacked on the end, countless times. But the forlorn appearance of this specimen makes it particularly poignant.

I moved to 10th Ave in 1995 and this bar was empty even back then. It amazing that it has not been occupied in all these years. I suspect it must be in some legal limbo. That sign has stood sentry over the bar for at least 20 years.
I've wondered about this curious spot for years and taken as many photos. That sign is sturdy! I would love to look inside this old place.
I used to grab a drink here before going to the Tunnel in the late 80's. There was nobody in there. Just an old guy behind the bar.
Joe was the old guy behind the bar. Hungarian-American and very friendly
I don't know about "Way over on 10th Ave," since I live over there! But I've lived here since '91 and I believe it's been closed since then and it's now 2017. Still closed.
