A Good Sign: Smith's Bar and Grill

Smith's Bar and Grill sticks out like a sore thumb on Eighth Avenue in Midtown, a real throwback to Time Square's cheaper, more hoi polloi past. It opened in 1954, has a buffet line, cafeteria seating and a bar (you know: a bar AND grill), and is real proud of its "hand-carved hot sandwiches." I know virtually nothing about the place, except that it's patrons are markedly unfancy and the interior has a vague vibe of mild menace.

Smith's is a wonderful place, where normal people can get normal drinks at normal prices.
