A Reminder of an Old Bleecker Street Institution


I noticed this photo on Ephemeral New York. Apparently, when Burritoville replaced the Lafayette French Pastry Shop many years ago, they didn't obliterate the original sign. Burritoville is gone now and the old sign is there for all to enjoy—at least until the new Z Pizza chain franchise that's due moves it.

For years, I thought Lafayette had closed for good. It actually just relocated to Greenwich Avenue, where it still is.

    Yes, it moved, and the bakery (at its new location) was in the national news early 2009 because of a featured cookie that was considered to be racist. Biggest bakery scandal of the year.
