Williamsburg Bank Building, Reception Hall--Same Difference

The beautiful, soaring, grand, ground-floor lobby of the Williamsburg Bank Building has finally found a new lease of life, after sitting idle and empty for years.

Manhattan promoter Jennifer Blumin is leasing the space use the space as a catering hall for weddings and other large events.

Kind of a comedown for the landmark. It's hard to think of people doing the chicken dance under that great ceiling. But I guess it's a better fate than the place becoming a Borders.

Rental prices will start at $15,000 a night, which Blumin calls "Brooklyn-sensitive pricing." Hm. Maybe "Brooklyn Heights-sensitive."

Williamsburg Bank Building Clock Just Not Doing It

The folks who run "One Hanson Place" have to do a little better in the clock maintenance department. The four faces of the timepiece atop the old Williamsburg Bank Building are not in sync. In this picture, the clock on the right, reading 1:30, is correct. The one on the left, reading 5:45, is most definitely wrong. Get your act together guys!

Some Stuff That's Not Getting Built

Calatrava's PATH station, the only decent thing that was ever designed for the World Trade Center area, is being scaled back.

Guess what? St. Vincent's can't do whatever it wants in the Village.

Moynihan Station is pretty damn dead.

Kellogg's Diner in Williamburg is closed for renovations and I don't feel very sanguine that it will reopen soon.

Nothing's happenin' in the grand lobby of the Williamsburg Bank Building. The new broker sees a big specialty store there or "a very important catering group" or "another great restaurant." Hey, I got a great use for this space. How about a bank?

Elaine's is old. Elaine is old.

Lawsuit happy Patsy's Restaurant is opening a branch in Atlantic City. Will they let you sit at the bar there?

About Time

For the first time in a year and a half, the four-sided clock tower on the Williamsburg Bank Building is telling correct time.

The Daily News reported that three of the four faces started up again at noon Wednesday, Jan. 16. The timing of the happy event is not random; on Jan. 15, the first of the now condofied building's new tenants moved in. Ain't that just the way.

CSI: Williamsburgh Bank Building

The Williamsburgh Bank Building's main hall was one of the things open during Open House New York last weekend. Hours were long, there were no lines, and virtually no one was supervising visitors (I witnessed one Russian family sneak in a back elevator and head north to parts unknown), so anyone who paid a call was in for a treat.

The details of the Byzantine, basilica-like banking hall, there to be lingered over, were tantalizing. Everywhere you turned there was some stone carving, piece of ironwork or tilework that symbolized thrift, industry or other noble human endeavor. Who knows when the owners of "One Hanson Place" will next allow regular folk to gaze upon these wonders, so I took a few shots to share.

Williamsburg Bank Building Breathes Again

This picture of the Williamsburg Bank Building (courtesy of Curbed), unmasked after so many months, certainly is encouraging. The old girl looks good. Now, get those clocks up and working!

Ain't Gonna Happen

Nobody is EVER going to refer to the Williamsburg Bank Building in Brooklyn as One Hanson Place, its faux-classy new name now that its been converted into a condo tower, any more than New Yorkers are going to start calling Sixth Avenue, The Avenue of the Americas, or refer to the PanAm Building as the Metlife building.

Sorry, demon developers. There's a price to pay for roping off the best bird's eye view of Brooklyn and pushing out all those poor little dentists.
