The Village Gate Sign Is Alive and Well
The nicest thing the CVS pharmacy chain ever did is not take down the old Village Gate sign from this Greenwich Village corner of Thompson and Bleecker Street. Art D'Lugoff famed club, opened in 1958, hasn't been here at 158 Bleecker Street since 1993. And it's unclear of the theatre that took its place, the Village Theatre, is still in operation.

My understanding is that the Village Gate space has been taken over by a new jazz club/restaurant: http://lepoissonrouge.com/html/index.html
The space re-opened this past week, apparently, with a performance by Charlie Haden and Quartet West as part of the JVC Jazz Fest. The place is now called Le Poisson Rouge; you can check it out at http://gothamist.com/2008/05/19/new_venue_alert_1.php
