Nightcaps

My new favorite dive that I desperately want to visit but am currently too afraid to enter is the Nitecaps, along Coney Island Avenue in Midwood. Fortress-like stucco facade. Weird Olde England font on "Nitecaps" and "Food" and "Spirits." Two small windows. It closes at 4 AM—unusual for this nabe—and is reportedly the only thing to do in the area if you're a night owl. It is also a "darts pub," and the Brooklyn Dart League plays here. I assume it's called Nightcaps because nobody who goes there has just one.

Just what is it you're afraid of? Looks great. Then again, went to high school in Midwood, that style is far from unfamiliar to me.

Suddenly dawns on me that it used to be an Italian restaurant. Almost certainly.

All dives initially seem forbidding to me. They are so very much the turf of a particular crowd, and if you are an unknown, they eyeball you mercilessly. And certain dives, I am happy to say, still contain preternaturally violent people who are not disinclined to get into a drunken brawl. Have a heart. I eventually work up the courage and cross the threshold.
