It's obvious, I know. But, for some reason (probably because it's obvious), I've never set it aside for distinction. So here it is. Hard to deny the Art Deco triumph of these awnings.
Thanks for the reminder. Like the bronze elevator doors at Macy's (formerly Abraham & Straus) on Fulton St in Brooklyn, we sometimes forget to appreciate the vestiges of classic Art Deco around us. By the way, had a fascinating time Saturday at the Brooklyn Historical Society library. The information in the post below pertains to researching any house in any Brooklyn neighborhood...and contains a link to an amazing online resource everyone should know about (it's addictive!) http://casacara.wordpress.com/2011/02/02/researching-a-brooklyn-alley/
It's just that little extra effort that makes a sign alluring isn't it? What signage was left for us & what we're (currently) leaving behind is worlds apart it seems...Lin
The original, running Jeremiad on the vestiges of Old New York as they are steamrolled under or threatened by the currently ruthless real estate market and the City Fathers' disregard for Gotham's historical and cultural fabric. Est. January 2006. Contact Me
I have lived in New York City since 1988 and earn my bread as a writer. I began this blog in January 2006. Beyond that, don't be so nosy.
"I am not a pessimist; to perceive evil where it exists is, in my opinion, a form of optimism."
—Roberto Rossellini
One of the old book jackets lining the walls of Chumley's. Eternal Shame on Bloomberg, the City Fathers, and the powers that be that this cultural landmark has STILL not been saved and reopened.
